Against All Odds

Posted by Reyn | December 27, 2008

Christmas has just over but I hope the peace and the joy of this festive celebration still linger in you and your family.

On this season of love, I want to share with you someone that’s been one of the greatest inspiration in my life: Dick Hoyt.

You might have heard of his heroic story. In 1962, Dick had a son named Rick who suffered cerebral palsy, caused by loss of oxygen to his brain at birth because his umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck. As the result, Rick was paralyzed and many doctors suggested Dick to institutionalize his ‘vegetable’ son.

But Dick refused. Instead, he proclaimed, “There is no way we will ever put our son away. We love him. He is ours. We will work with him and bring him to the place where he can reach his greatest potential. We will never, never put him away simply because he is different.”

In 1977, Rick told his father that he wanted to run a 5-mile uphill marathon. Dick agreed and sign up for the event. Dick was 40, not a runner and carrying a heavy load. The organizers, although agreed to let them in, doubted that they won’t even make it past the first corner. But with perseverance and the will of iron, Team Hoyt finished the race without coming in last.

When his Rick said, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped,” Dick was extremely joyful. And although he was physically exhausted, Dick said, “Making Rick happy was the greatest feeling in the world.”

As of February, 2008, the Hoyts had competed in 958 endurance events, including 65 marathons and 6 Ironman triathlons.

Watch their wonderful journey in this video… And I dare you to keep a dry eye…
