Branding And Marketing Yourself With Twitter

Posted by Reyn | November 30, 2008

I’ve been going through the internet and stumbled upon countless new web applications that were going hot in discussion after their launch.

But only a few of them really made me hooked me up and said, “This is IT!”

Twitter is one of those.

The concept of this ‘micro-blogging’ system really couldn’t be any simpler. It lets anyone send a message no longer than 140 characters that answers the question “What are you doing now?”

You can send that message at any time from your computer or from your mobile phone, and it can be seen by anyone who has chosen to follow these messages.

That’s all there is to it.

But this is just the beginning. There, so much more in Twitter than just sharing your activities. In business standpoint, Twitter can serve as branding extension and build your presence online. And that’s what we’ll be discussing here.

Just as you have friends in Facebook, you have “followers” in Twitter. They follow your messages - and in the process get to follow your life as well. But unlike Facebook, in your profile you don’t have any content except your messages, a short bio and an URL to your website.

Now, you don’t have to get frustrated thinking about what you should write in your bio. Twitter only give you maximum 160 characters (including spaces) to write your bio.

Yup, you read it right, only 20 characters more than you can write in you message to explain your whole life. So you can’t possibly squeeze in all the details of your achievements, dreams and situations.

Instead, write just one or two important facts about you and make it into one sentence. For example, my bio says:

“Network marketer, entrepreneur and a friendly guy with deep passion in promoting personal development and financial mastery.”

Short and simple but pretty accurate in describing about myself.

But with so little information about yourself, how can you possibly brand yourself in Twitter?

I’m glad you asked! Here’s the fun part. First, please look at my Twitter profile here: http://twitter.com/ReynAria

Notice that in the background image, I stuffed in some information about my network marketing blog. (I hope you can see it as you need at least 1280 pixels wide of resolution in your monitor to see it properly.) Or you can just see the image below.

This is a creative idea I learned from other online marketing gurus. If you see the people I followed, you’ll notice that some of them also use their background as an extension of their profile.

That’s it for today.

Now you have a branded Twitter profile that is presentable and marketable. In the next post, I will be covering some tips on how to build your list of responsive followers.

Thanks Dennis.

It’s a simple tips yet very smart to touch up the background image like that. I wonder who came up with this idea the first time.

Keep in touch…

Companies seem to ignore the single largest online branding/advertising venue available: their own regular external emails. Why not use these emails to market the senders company?

You have a website.
You send emails.

Why not multiply your sales-staff by “wrapping” the regular email in an interactive letterhead?

No other marketing or advertising medium is as targeted as an email between people that know each other (as opposed to mass emails). These emails are always read and typically kept.
