Building A Huge List Of Followers On Twitter
Posted by Reyn | December 2, 2008
One of the marketers’ most-asked-questions about Twitter is, “How do I get followers?”
Unless you are a very good and famous player in your niche, don’t expect many people will just flock in to be your followers. Be proactive! This is the rule of the game.
What you need to do is to first BE a follower.
Yup, you read it right. If you have no online presence before (your name is never heard of on the internet), begin by following as many people as possible.
Don’t just follow anyone though. The first batch of people you follow are preferably friends and relatives that you’re already know. Twitter has a built-in function to scan your web mail and compare your contacts to the people in its own database. You can then follow them if they have already joined. If they haven’t, you can send them invitations to join Twitter.
Next, you can start adding experts from your particular niche. I suggest you follow them as they might share several priceless information that you won’t know otherwise. One expert usually follow other experts. So just check their follow list to find other experts.
Lastly, find people who are interested to your niche. You can easily find them by the content of their tweets or short bio. Unfortunately, Twitter still don’t have this search feature built-in on their site. However, you can use Tweetscan to do the job. It’s basically a Twitter-specific search engine that’s very useful when you’re looking for people to follow or ask advice from.
Now that you have followed many people, you will notice that some of them will actually follow you in return. Voila, you get followers now. If people follow you, you will be listed on their “following” list and there’s a high chance that other people might follow you as well. Note: someone who is looking for people to follow usually look on the “following” rather than “followers” list.
The universe has a law that states: “Give and you shall be given.” In Twitter, it’s: “Follow and you shall be followed.” =)
To get more followers, you might also want to utilize other sites beside Twitter. You can actually invite people to follow you from your blog, Facebook, MySpace, Youtube or any other site you have that you can put a link to your Twitter profile. This is an extremely good strategy to gain more followers.
One last warning: never waste your time by adding just anyone you come across. As I said before, Twitter is a social networking site, not a popularity contest. Having 5,000 followers that don’t listen to you is useless anyway.
That’s it for today!
Now that you know how to grow your Twitter list, in the next time, we’ll be discussing about how to make loyal and responsive followers.
