Part 3 - How To Start Branding Yourself On The Internet
Posted by Reyn | February 3, 2009
This is part three of the three installment series on personal branding.
In this last part of personal branding series, I want to specifically cover the action steps that one should do in order to start building a strong personal brand.
First of all, you need to understand that personal branding is not only meant for famous or successful people. It’s a powerful concept that specifically target every day people on how to start creating their own brands.
So contrary to the myth, personal branding is extremely important for any one…and it’s doable for all Joes and Janes out there.
Basically, here’s the four main steps you need to do to start crafting your powerful personal brand on the internet.
- Always Use Your Real Name And Picture
No matter where I look at it, there are always people using keywords as their name. Some even use pictures of money. Don’t do that! You are here to connect with people who might be your friends and hopefully business partners. And to build such relationship, transparency is crucial to build trust. Use your real name and picture whenever you can.
There are exception to this though. If you’re well known for a certain nickname, like Stone Evans “The Home Biz Guy” , then it’s ok to use it. However, avoid generic name like “Making Money Online” or “Internet Millionaire”. It’s just plain stupid to use this kind of names. Remember that you’re dealing with real people on the internet. They mostly eager to get to know new people, but avoid money-minded people like plague.
- Create Your Own Home Page
Having a personal home page is important for building a strong personal brand. Think about it as your online home where people can come and interact with you. You can use social media profile like Facebook or Twitter for your personal site, but it’s better to have your own blog. With your own blog, you can build it to suit your personality and craft a stronger brand impression. Additionally, constant updates is preferable to maintain the ’stickiness’ of your brand in people’s mind.
- Involve Actively In Social Networking Sites
When it comes to building a personal brand, many people assume that it ends when you have created your own website. They think that people will beat their path to your site, admire the looks of your site and like magic, your brand become recognized. Wrong! In the starting phase of your brand, you will have to actively seek people. The best place to connect with people related to your niche is in social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. Try to make some time building your network in these sites and your online brand will spread more rapidly.
- Constantly Deliver Value To Your Market
In part two of this series, you know that your brand must be superior - you need to be an expert. Nobody wants to listen to a second grade brand. And the best way to show your superiority is not by mere, blatant self-promotion saying you’re the best, yada, yada… But it’s to walk your talk and be a teacher. Tell your target market about your success stories at and teach them to do the same. Provide valuable information or guidance frequently. The more value you deliver to your target market, they more superior your brand is in their eyes.
Bottom line, personal brand does not happen overnight. A specific amount of time and effort are needed in the building phase. But once you nail it right, you can be sure that you will no longer need to actively chase prospects to join your business. They will literally come and ask whether they can join your team.
It’s funny to see that when I focused on building my personal brand instead of my company brand, I got several calls from my prospects asking to join immediately. It’s not magic…and I assure you, you can experience the same thing if you’re willing to take the path of personal branding.

Hi there. I remembered reading a book on Buzz Marketing. And yes they did mention about branding yourself by using personal touch to your blog. I think that it even more necessary for Network Marketing blogs or website. Why? As we all know… Network marketing is a people business and we have to first establish ourselves or would i put it that we should first prove to others that we are “no” scams or fly by night marketers.
In fact there are too many these days..
Any Reyn, nice blog you have.

Hi guys, I think attraction marketing is the single most powerful marketing technique you can use, as long as you are willing to invest in your on going education and acquire the right skill set that most people are not willing to acquire for themselves, Then you will literally have people tripping over themselves to join you in your business because you are a leader in there eyes someone who can solve their problems.

Exactly, Brian. I like that logic. People will undoubtedly come to you if you have something that they don’t.
And becoming an expert is not that complicated. It was Earl Nightingale that said, “If you will spend 1 hour extra per day in your field every day for one year you will become an expert. Five years and you will become national authority.”
