I Love Your Comments!

Posted by Reyn | February 6, 2009

Today, I want to sincerely thank you for all your participation in discussion through your comments.

Since the beginning of this blog, many of you have given so much valuable feedback to me. I just want to tell you that I have always been reading every comment you give and I’m grateful for that.

Now, it’s my turn to give something for you. As part of my appreciation, I have implemented some incentives in this blog for your active commenting:

  1. Top Commentators List

If you haven’t noticed yet, a couple of weeks ago I put a list of most active commentators in this blog, sorted by the number of comments given. For bonus, I don’t put the nofollow tag in this list. So you can get a bit of page rank by being listed. As it’s a reward for active commentators, the list will only count your comments in the last 30 days.

  2. DoFollow Tag

I have also installed Lucia’s Linky Love in this blog. Basically, this plugin will strip the default nofollow tag to your site in the comment section after a certain number of accepted comments. I set the number to 5, so after your fifth post, the nofollow tag to your site will be removed for the future comments.

  3. Last Blog Post Snippet

With CommentLuv plugin, every time you post a comment on this blog, it will try to find you latest blog post and then display the title with the link below your comment. This is a good way to showcase your related posts to this community.

Although my intention is to encourage commenting and reward active commentators, I’m sure there will be some people who will take the advantage of this incentives in the wrong way and spam my blog. To encounter such behavior, I will enforce tighter rules on my blog commenting policy:

  1. No Keywords as Names

I know that you will get a better page rank juice by having keywords as your anchor text link. However, the main purpose of commenting is to discuss a topic and interact like real people. From now on, using keywords as names will be forbidden. Any ‘creative’, similar names Joe@OnlineMarketing will also be rejected. Anyway, it’s better that you use your real name for the purpose of personal branding.

  2. No Pointless Comments

One liners like ‘great post’ have always been deleted. However, nowadays spammers get better by elongating it into ‘great post. I totally agree with you. You’re awesome!’. Just in case you don’t get it, This kind of comments that do not add any value will also be deleted immediately.

  3. No Comment Dump

Any one who tries to leave like 5 comments at once and then come back a few weeks later to rinse and repeat will be banned. I will only accept no more than two consecutive comments per day. If you try to post the third comment on the same day, it will be deleted. Please read the posts in a more relax manner then comment casually.

  4. No Signatures in Comments

I have provided you with commenter name and website fields, and they will be visible in the comment header. So save your time by not putting another name and website address in your comment.

Now I know that this rules are a bit strict, but don’t get me wrong here. I’m also using blog commenting as part of my traffic strategy. But the ultimate question is, how do actually you get traffic? Of course when people click on your link. Now, do you think people will even bother to visit your site if you say ‘excellent post’?

Let me ask you this. If you see someone with the name ‘Making Money Online’ and leaving one liner comment, what do you think of him? For me, he’s a hardcore marketer in action and I will assume his site is full of money making hypes with little value.

On the other hand, when someone is leaving constructive comments, I will be interested to know more about that person and will surely visit his site with full of expectations.

Remember, you are rewarded according to the value you deliver to the market. Talk soon down there ;)
