Network Marketing As A Hobby?

Posted by Reyn | December 30, 2008

As confusing as it can be, some distributors consider their network marketing business as a hobby.

Sure, you do it outside your full-time job and you do it because you want to, but it does not justify the thought of having this half-hearted mentality.

Joining network marketing is considered a business, and a business must be treated like one, not a hobby.

I’ve heard someone saying, “You know what, it’s more like a hobby to me. I do it just to get some extra money.”

Well, then it is a business!

Business is defined as all activities engaged in or caused to be engaged in with the object of financial gain, benefit or advantage, direct or indirect. Sorry for the too technical definition, but it defines business clearly.

Anyway, network marketing starters easily get their views towards this business distorted as the sign-up fees are generally small.

For about less than $200, you can actually join most network marketing companies. Comparing with brick-and-mortar businesses, this is definitely looks like a joke.

One obvious symptom of this pitfall is lack of commitment. They usually very easy to make excuses not to start marketing right now and do not feel it as a must. They say that they will do it if they can spare some time, but that time never come. It’s not that you don’t have time, but it’s that you don’t make time for it.

In the history of network marketing, I’ve never heard anyone just happened to be successful. All I know is that they committed specific time, money and determination in order to reach the pinnacle of network marketing.

Having said all that, I’m not implying that network marketing can’t be run in a fun way. In fact, all successful network marketers are enjoying building their business. They love doing it and that’s why they do it religiously.

The main difference between the successful and the unsuccessful is in the definition of enjoying and relaxing. Unsuccessful network marketers feels that in order for them to enjoy, they must be relax which they often associate it with laziness. They just do it when they feel like it.

Let’s say you pay $100,000 for entering the company. Will you do it seriously? Will you MAKE your time for it? Of course you will.

Listen carefully – it all boils down to this. If you treat your network marketing business like a hobby, it will pay you like a hobby. But if you treat it like a million dollar investment, it will pay you like one.

Hey Reyn,

I totally agree with your post as many of the Networkers I find looking at their business as a hobby are very rarely earning the supplemental income they set out to make when they got started.

As you know, the specialized knowledge, specific skill sets and desire to succeed needed to make it in our competitive industry require much more than a hobby mentality.

Thanks for sharing,

Kylon

@Kylon - Excellent point, Kylon. Knowledge and skills are indeed important for networkers be it online or offline.
