New Year Resolution - How To Snap Out Of Your Slump And Kick Ass!
Posted by Reyn | January 1, 2009
It’s 2009 now!
A brand new year has just begun and I believe you’ve already have a plan in your mind about what you’ll be achieving in this one year ahead.
I congratulate you even more if you’ve already written your goals in clear sentences.
Now that you’ve determine the outcomes of this year, it’s time to put your plan into actions. But unfortunately, this is where many people abandon their blueprint and end up procrastinating till the end of the year.
At first, they picture this seemingly ideal situation where everything come into place perfectly without problems or delays. Yet on the first day they get out to do it, they are hit by the reality that it’s not as easy as they think it would be. One problem after another keep on coming. One commitment after another that they’ve never expected to have keep popping up.
Over the time, they keep doubting their strategies and the question “will I ever be able to do it?” ringing in their heads. Soon enough, their dreams will just be dreams. They quit.
This is what we call ‘New Year resolution relapse’.
So the question is, how do we get ourselves into the state where we are motivated to execute our plans and consistently work towards our goals? I have a good news and a bad news for you.
The bad news: problems and other commitments will always arise whether you like it or not. No matter how perfect you plan is, somewhere along the way, you’ll face difficulties. If you only prepare for the smooth ride, you’ll be beaten heavily when the road gets bumpy.
The good news is, whatever happen in your life actually have little to no effect to your end results. It may be confusing, so let me clarify it for you.
Frankly speaking, your problems can not affect you unless you let them to. A problem is just one of many events happening in your life. The problem in itself is not detrimental; but how your mind interpret the problem is.
We’re talking about mind over matter here. So one problem for one person does not necessarily mean problem for another. That’s why we often see 2 persons working in the same company, under the same boss with the same task but one sulking over difficulties while the other just go wild and kick ass.
If you want to snap out of your slump and kick ass, there are 2 things you need to do.
- Make it a Must
Generally, people make their wish list based on wants rather than needs. You see, when you think that it would be good if you can exercise regularly to get into shape, chances are slim that you’ll take the necessary action. Not to mention pushing yourself beyond limit. Why? Because along the way, you’ll find many other ‘good’ things. You’ll end up sacrificing you goals for countless other temporary needs.
What you need can not just merely be a want…it has to be a must. When you understand that you MUST exercise or you can suffer from heart attacks, you’ll do it. If you MUST practice daily or you’ll fail your exam, you’ll do it. Achieving your goals have to be a must for you and you won’t settle for less. This way, you’ll do whatever it takes (as long as it is legal, moral and ethical) to get to your destination.
Now, I have a secret formula to transform your wants to be musts: wants + whys = musts. In everything you wish, ask yourself, “why must I get it?” When you clearly understand the reason why you’re doing what you’re doing, you won’t stop until you get it. This simple logical question can really put your emotion on fire, and emotion is the main propeller
- Just Do It
As I said, some time along the way, you’ll get into a slump and just want to sit around doing nothing. Although you have reasoned with yourself why you must do it, you just feel like you don’t want to do it. Somehow, you’re not that motivated anymore and you really need it to start. If it’s motivation that you want in order to get yourself into action, then you might never get that emotion boost.
I used to be procrastinating when it comes to writing articles for my marketing. I always waited for the ‘right’ moment that I feel like doing it. But sadly, that moment never or at least rarely came. Then I tried to just do it and it’s been amazing. Everytime I feel I’m not in the mood, I just sit down on my computer and start writing. Suddenly, I feel motivated again and words just coming out smoothly. The truth is, motivation follows action, not the other way around.

Great article! I really needed to read that. I tend to sit around waiting for motivation. You are right about motivation following action. When I think about it, I realize its true. Whenever I’ve had to get up and do something, I got more motivated. Sitting around waiting for it just doesn’t work.
I would like to put a link to your site on my blog - https://sandyatyourservice.wordpress.com Would that be okay?
Thanks again!
