The Boom Of Blogosphere And The Death Of Blogging?

Posted by Reyn | December 23, 2008

Over the last 4 years, blogosphere has been growing at a magnificently fast rate. On September 2008, more than 133 million blogs are indexed by Technorati. And this number does not even include Chinese Blogs (70+ million). For the simplicity of this post, we’ll just take the English blogs into consideration.

But seeing only this staggering number can be deceiving. Upon deeper investigation, many of those are ‘here today and gone tomorrow’ type of blog.

Here’s the chart from May 2006-March 2007 comparing how many blogs were created to how many were actually active (blogs that have been updated in the past 90 days).

Chart of active blogs in blogosphere

From this chart, we can clearly see that even though the number of blogs created is increasing, the number of active blogs does not went up proportionally.

That was March 2007. In September 2008, Technorati’s State of the Blogosphere 2008 Report disclosed a surprising finding:

Technorati’s State of the Blogosphere 2008 report

Although the number of blogs almost double from March 2007, the number of active blogs is halved.

Today, only 7.4 million blogs are reported to have their latest post in the last 120 days.

But in order to determine whether a blog is active, 120 days is too long. For accuracy, we take active blogs as those who have been posted to in the last 7 days which is only 1.1% of blogosphere population or 1.5 million blogs.

Is this something to be afraid of?

No! The declining number of active bloggers does not necessarily mean blogs are not effective anymore. Blogs are just mediums of information and people are constantly looking for information. The demand is still high, if not rising.

The problem lies more on the human factor rather than the system. We are creatures that are very easy to get bored and lazy. Writing even one post per week can be daunting over the long term.

Bottom line? While it is also true that people are starting to migrate to microblogging platform like Twitter, the fact remains that more and more people are going online in search for valuable information, which clearly cannot be satisfied with just 140 characters long.

This is my opinion. What’s yours? Feel free to give comments below…

Those are some amazing numbers. I didn’t know there are that many blogs out there.

Considering the effort required to keep a blog active and popular I fully understand why the numbers reflect the way they do. Especially if you run several blogs. It takes a real passion for blogging to keep going when first getting started with no or little traffic/comments.

BTW I really like this theme. The header and crisp colors are striking. Content ain’t bad either ;)

Exactly. For me it’s unimaginable to have 3 or more blogs at the same time. Thanks for the comment Brian.
Merry Christmas to you and your fam.

Good morning, Reyn.

This is my first visit to your blog. I found you, and it, via Twitter.

I think Twitter is an excellent way to network with friends and to find people who may become friends. It’s also an excellent way to send information about what we’re doing so that we learn more about each other and build more confidence and rapport.

As far as blogging goes, it’s inevitable that many blogs will be started and fall by the wayside. As with anything else that is worthwhile, it takes time and effort to maintain a blog and to continue to find interesting things to write about.

The stats and charts you posted are interesting because it shows that our competition is staying relatively static and - as with many things in business - we can achieve success by outlasting our competition.

I like the quality of what I’ve read here and just subscribed to your blog via email.

Act on your dream!

JD

@John Dilbeck - Exactly. And as the nature of blogging that’s easy to get in, it’s also easy to quit. Most of the time, it’s not the genius that prevail but the most persistent one.
